The ability to use DDS textures is interesting.
Isn't DDS the format that Adobe Photoshop uses with layers?
Direct Draw Surface format. It's the raw texture format used by DirectX, which can be compressed quite significantly.
nvidia has a free plugin to allow you to use dds in photoshop and also a download to allow you to see dds files in windows as thumbnails.

I can see them in XP as thumbnails now.
They have a nice free fx composer too, I played with it a few years ago, but have so much else to learn set it aside, but always kept a mental note that it is there.
