Title: Web Hosts
Post by: kryton9 on July 19, 2006, 03:19:25 PM
I have been looking at 2 companies as possible places to use as web hosts. Does anyone have experience with either.

I want to have a place to put what I do and to also have a forum eventually. This will be music, art, animations, 3d stuff and of course programs.
I don't see a need for ecommerce but it might be something down the road.

Here are the 2 sites as of July 2006 that I sort of narrowed it down to and plans.

1and1:

The second is actually 2 companies which are the same parent company. Just different plans.

THanks for any input.

THanks Larry, I posted on the other thread when you announced your site. That is a nice looking forum package will look at it more in depth. But thanks for the reply.
Are you using the home plan or the business one?  By the way love your new avatar, that is really neat!!

I setup an apache php (wamp) server from home and wrote a log system and got freaked out by the number of unknown people trying to log in.  I had only set it up to test with my friends and only sent them an email about the server and never advertised it anywhere. So only about 9 people had accounts and passwords for the webserver. But when I saw that about 1/3 of the log file was from unknown ips trying to log in it scared me. So I shut everything down. I don't want to be a super web security expert. I did put in security for all I could with php as recommended and also wrote to block against sql hacks. So no one got passed the log in screen. I was wondering if they were bots just scanning and surfing the web. Either way, I decided not to host my own site for security reasons.

For 1 and 1 you have the option to upgrade as you need to, so I was wondering should I start even with the $2.99 a month one and bump up when I am ready to?

I can be your webhost. Very reliable and flexible, but more expensive :P

I use www.b-one.net (http://www.b-one.net) and i've found them to be great!

I was recommended to use 1and1 and although they provide a solid reliable service i found that B-one was simpler to use (web interface) and the network backbone they use is way faster. Also B-one are cheaper than 1and1. ;)

I use the business plan.
It is the least expensive web host I have ever used and has more access and features.
My original ISP was bought out by earthlink and they no longer offered linux host and access.
I like to putz with my web site often.

b-one is about as expensive as I am. I'll charge you $10/month for 4gb space and cpanel (includes php, perl, mysql, ftp, webmail, statistics, etc), with 50gb transfer included (more than enough unless you're going to host warez or porno) in a server with a 100mbps link. Those webhosting companies with "unlimited" transfer are usually slow enough for you to be unable to transfer more than they want you to :P Notice how they don't tell you the server's link speed. You must always take notice of what they don't tell you!
